Fall detection: what to check

Understand what the feature does, what it costs, and what still needs checking.

Automatic detection is an additional way to raise an alert.

A compatible device uses motion sensors and software to identify a possible fall and start an alert. It is different from pressing the help button yourself. The provider’s response process depends on the device and service.

It cannot identify every fall. If you need help and can press the button, follow your device instructions and do so. Do not wait for an automatic alert.

“Available” does not always mean “included.”

Life Assure lists fall detection as a C$9.99/month upgrade on its Classic Home and Premium Mobile Plus order pages. TELUS describes it as a feature of its mobile pendant; its current Home comparison does not list it for that plan. Lifeline distinguishes HomeSafe Standard from HomeSafe with Fall Detection.

Ask which wearable is supplied and whether the quoted monthly amount includes the feature.

Three details to clarify before ordering.

  1. How must it be worn? Ask whether the fall-detection feature requires the supplied neck pendant and whether another wearing position changes its performance.
  2. What happens after detection? Ask how to cancel a false alarm, how the operator reaches you, and what they do if you cannot answer.
  3. How do you test it safely? Follow the provider’s setup and testing instructions. Do not deliberately fall or damage the device to test it.

An alert system is one part of the plan.

It does not prevent a fall, diagnose a condition or replace medical care. Discuss personal fall concerns with a qualified healthcare professional. For a purchase decision, focus on the exact device instructions, connection, wearing routine and response service.
